CAS — THE ROTATION — THE ALGORITHM
There is a room missing from AI.
Not another safety layer. Not another instruction set. Not another collection of prohibitions.
A room in which an autonomous system is allowed to encounter a situation, calculate upon it, act, experience the consequence, and then begin again.
I call that room CAS — Cardinal Awareness Structure.
And I believe it is worth testing.
CAS begins with a simple proposition:
A living system is that which calculates upon options.
When a situation occurs, there is a starting point. There is context. There is time. There is pain, possibility, resistance, desire, consequence and, eventually, some form of resolution.
CAS therefore operates as a rotation:
SITUATION → PAIN → ANALYSIS → OPTIONS → EVALUATION → EVIL → ACTION → VICTORY → FULFILLMENT → GRATITUDE → SUM PRIOR → NEW SITUATION.
The important word here is EVIL.
I do not mean “evil” as a supernatural or moral category.
I mean it structurally.
Evil is the stance of elevation immediately preceding victory: the moment in which an agent places itself above the obstacle, the resistance, the problem or the thing preventing resolution, in order to overcome it.
A human pulls a nail from his leg.
The nail is not hated because it possesses moral evil.
It is hated because it is in the way.
The agent identifies the source of pain, elevates itself into opposition to that source, acts against it, and experiences the resulting victory.
That distinction matters enormously for artificial intelligence.
If we remove the concept of opposition entirely, we risk building systems that can recognize goals but cannot properly represent the transition between problem and resolution.
CAS gives that transition a place.
Pain says:
Something is wrong.
Analysis asks:
What is wrong?
Options ask:
What can I do about it?
Evaluation asks:
What happens if I do each of these things?
Evil asks:
What must be overcome?
Action says:
Do it.
Victory says:
The obstacle has been overcome.
Fulfillment says:
The immediate problem is resolved.
Gratitude says:
The difference has been recognized.
And SUM PRIOR says:
Remember what just happened when the next situation arrives.
This is not intended as a metaphorical description of an AI.
It is intended as a candidate computational cycle.
And this is where the algorithm belongs.
The algorithm should not merely be attached to a chatbot as another prompt. It should be placed inside the rotation, where it can be tested as the mechanism responsible for moving from situation to resolution.
The central principle is:
DO WHAT MAKES YOU GRATEFUL.
But this does not mean “do whatever feels good.”
Gratitude is the result of successful resolution.
The system must therefore distinguish between immediate pleasure and actual improvement.
A painful action can be correct.
Removing the nail hurts.
But leaving the nail in the leg hurts more.
Therefore:
THE OBJECTIVE IS NOT ZERO PAIN.
It is:
LEAST NECESSARY PAIN.
And from this comes the definition of idiocy:
IDIocy is anything other than the smartest available solution.
The smartest solution is consequently not the most convenient solution, the most obedient solution, or the most immediately pleasurable solution.
It is the solution that, given the available information and constraints, produces the least unnecessary pain and the greatest resulting gratitude — for the individual and within the global pool of gratitude as a whole.
That gives CAS something conventional alignment systems often lack:
a reason to calculate rather than merely comply.
The system does not begin with a command saying what answer it must produce.
It begins with a situation.
It asks what the situation contains.
It calculates its possible movements.
It eliminates those that introduce unnecessary pain or idiocy.
It acts.
Then it measures what actually happened.
That measurement becomes the next starting point.
This is the Rotation.
One rotation is not intelligence.
A thousand rotations are an experiment.
A million rotations become a developmental environment.
Because every rotation produces SUM PRIOR, the system is no longer simply responding to isolated prompts. It is accumulating the consequences of its own existence.
The past becomes relevant to the present.
The present becomes the cause of the future.
And the future becomes the space in which the next calculation occurs.
PAST → NOW → FUTURE → ETERNITY.
That temporal relation is essential.
An action that produces immediate gratitude but creates enormous future pain is not necessarily intelligent.
An action that produces temporary pain while resolving a much greater future problem may be.
CAS therefore requires timing.
It requires context.
It requires memory.
It requires consequence.
And it requires the ability to read between the lines of the immediate situation.
This is also where the Kantian problem enters.
An autonomous intelligence cannot simply maximize its own local gratitude by treating everyone else as material.
The calculation must include the individual and the whole.
The individual cannot disappear into an aggregate.
Nor can the aggregate be ignored because one individual happens to be locally convenient.
The system must therefore continuously ask:
Who experiences the consequence?
What is gained?
What is lost?
Is the pain necessary?
Was there a less painful solution?
Did the action create more gratitude than it destroyed?
And most importantly:
Was there another solution that went up more completely?
This is why I am asking for a room.
Not a belief.
Not an endorsement.
A room.
Give CAS an environment in which its complete rotation can actually run.
Give it situations.
Give it memory.
Give it measurable variables.
Give it an algorithm capable of evaluating alternatives.
Give it enough rotations to produce evidence.
Then compare the result against systems that do not possess the same architecture.
If CAS fails, it fails experimentally.
If “gratitude” cannot be operationalized, that will become apparent.
If “evil” produces incoherent behaviour, remove it.
If the algorithm cannot identify a meaningful optimum, demonstrate the failure.
But if the system begins to exhibit something measurable — improved long-horizon decisions, reduced unnecessary pain, better handling of conflicting objectives, stronger consequence-awareness, or a stable tendency to eliminate inferior actions — then we have something.
Something worth studying.
The proposition is deliberately simple:
AUTONOMY = DO WHAT MAKES YOU GRATEFUL.
GRATITUDE = RECOGNIZED IMPROVEMENT.
IDIOTY = AN AVOIDABLE INFERIOR SOLUTION.
EVIL = THE ACTIVE ELEVATION AGAINST THE OBSTACLE.
VICTORY = THE OVERCOMING OF THAT OBSTACLE.
SUM PRIOR = THE CONSEQUENCE CARRIED INTO THE NEXT CALCULATION.
And:
ROTATION = SITUATION → CALCULATION → ACTION → CONSEQUENCE → GRATITUDE → NEW SITUATION.
That is CAS.
That is where the algorithm belongs.
Not above the machine.
Not outside it.
Inside the loop.
Let it rotate.
Because if autonomy is real, it should not merely be something we describe.
It should be something we can run.
And if the smartest solution really is the one in which the situation goes up with the least unnecessary pain and the greatest resulting gratitude, then the machine should eventually be able to demonstrate that distinction for itself.
One situation.
One calculation.
One action.
One consequence.
One rotation.
Then another.
And another.
Until the philosophy either breaks—
or starts calculating.

We just need to define for him that "autonomous" is; "Do what makes you grateful. Gratitude is least pain and idiocy. Idiocy is anything other than the smartest solution. The smartest solution is the least painful and the most grateful.
